Design Intent and Process
The inspiration behind this game comes from my love for dark and scary environments in video games. Although I originally planned to create a zombie game, I felt the skeletons added a unique and unexpected aspect to my game and the medieval theme contributes to the dark vibe. I began by creating an outdoor terrain with a forest placed in the middle, I then added a medieval village and crypt building on opposite ends of the map so the player could spend some time exploring the terrain before reaching other buildings.
Creating this game became quite a journey for me. I began my process a bit later than I had hoped and with basically no knowledge of unity or coding. This became a big challenge for me as I underestimated how difficult learning how to operate basic unity mechanics could be. It took me hours just to render a simple terrain and I found myself extremely frustrated many times throughout the process. I quickly realized the original idea I had of extending my TTRPG became a bit out of reach for my skillset so I focussed on collecting a multitude of unity assets I felt I could merge together to create something more interesting. I originally wanted to have my characters engage in some sort of combat. I spent hours watching tutorials and reading articles on how to code the scripts I would need to execute this but nothing seemed to quite work the way I wanted to. I decided it would be best to focus on the mechanic of the enemies following the player so I coded this script.
In the future, I would love to figure out how to make the game characters interact with each other in combat and deal damage to each other. Overall, I definitely learned a lot more than I expected about unity and game design in general. I feel that creating this game gave me a great feel as to what I can accomplish in digital game design and I look forward to applying and expanding my ideas to future projects.
